Between A Closing Fist
Notes & Recommendations for December
Greenpoint, Sunday Afternoon
I let the sharp edge dig into my spine. I push harder against it, moving side to side very slowly. It feels good. It feels good to be sitting. I did not expect to be doing this. Now, I am dancing very slowly and awkwardly and I am occupying very much space. The music does the same. The deejay is wearing transition glasses. He plays something that is close to jazz. The atmosphere is friendly like a house party, but it is also fancy, somehow. Maybe like a spa for ketamine enjoyers. It is only the four of us dancing but it is mostly Charles and Chanel and they are very good at dancing and very good at dancing together. I would like to dance with someone like this, I think. Charles makes a symbol with his hands, and we are now on the roof that is through another unit, where there are people practicing acting and being dramatic. We are just smoking.
Meserole Street, Thursday Night
The entryway is arresting. It is always arresting to me, and there is a cloth covering the couch that gives me the sense that no matter how ugly it is, the thing underneath is worse. Up and left and left and at the end of the hall through the door. Every single person is in this room. The room does not have room for everyone. The air is not; it is fog and 15 cigarettes and 1-4 joints. I feel tipsy immediately. I decide to accelerate that process, which was something I had already decided by wearing leather pants. I am taking dumb photos with Amelia. It feels good to be dumb then and everyone is enjoying the music and the temperature in the room is very warm.
9W North, Monday Afternoon
We are sliding quickly sideways towards a very large truck and everyone is silent. The rain is coming down in sheets and the inside of the car is foggy. The gas reads empty and it always does this. Our slide stops abruptly, the wheels catch the road and the silence ends, barely. I move over to the right lane and we are in Newburgh very slowly. Everyone is in socks and wandering around the church and Michael is serving us juice. Tomer is talking business: bar splits, co-pro, lineups. I do not know how it will all work, but We do. There is a lot of We now. This is a good pronoun and Bess says I do not use it enough. Here’s what We recommend:
